How to Self-care for your home windows

Windows - although a key function of our house - are often considered one of the less important features when people think about renovating your space. It keeps things outside from the place you call home. And sometimes we take them for granted.

When accidents happen, you could face a hefty fine of up to $1000! Fear not, as we've brought you a #cheatsheet on how to avoid just that!

The 3Cs - Clean, Check and Change

Most of us are busy, have a job and a life. And its not unimaginable to forget checking our windows from time-to-time. The best way to rectify this is to have a fixed schedule to check your windows every year, i.e. having the habit of checking your windows every New Year's eve and Hari Raya.

Sliding Windows

Sliding windows are as intended, slid to open, these classic fixtures are usually located in the living rooms and bedrooms.

We recommend the following:

  • Use a brush to clear away dirt and debris and clean the area with a damp cloth.

  • Tighten loose track screws with a screwdriver

  • Replace damaged or broken gaskets and cracked glass panes with the help of a BCA-approved window contractor

Louvered Windows

Louvered windows are easily recognisable by their parallel glass panels that can be angled to allow air to pass through freely. They are typically found in bathrooms and at kitchens.

We recommend the following:

  • Apply lubricating oil to keep pivots moving smoothly if they are stiff

  • Avoid hanging heavy objects on lever lock

  • Replacing damaged or rusty glass panes with the help of a BCA-approved window contractor

Casement Windows

Casement windows are the push-pull variants of the sliding windows. As the movements require some effort, wear and tear is more obvious on casement windows as compared to sliding windows.

We recommend:

  • Removing dirt and debris with the help of a brush, particularly at the hinges, friction stay and tracks

  • Lubricate the moving parts every 6 months

  • Replace damaged or cracked glass panes, damaged friction stays and corroded screws or rivets with the help of a BCA-approved window contractor
